eHarmony is a privately held company based in Los Angeles. 1 Media and General Atlantic, a NY-based private equity firm.
It was founded in 2000 by Dr. Neil Clark Warren, a clinical psychologist, and Chris Coyne, a graduate of Harvard University School of Business. It is considered to be the first online dating site to use a scientific approach in an attempt to find compatible partners for its members. It ranks as one of the top 20 most popular websites in America with millions of unique visitors each month who apparently have strict criteria for selecting many hundreds of thousands of registered users.
The name “harmony” comes from the words harmony and unity. In 2008 Match unsuccessfully sued over allegations that parts of the computer code were copied. It is also at the center of a number of controversies about its fee structure and how it makes money, but that is a story for another day!
