Cleverly, you can set the time period that the automation works at, say disabling motion detection turning on a light during the day. With the Philips app you can set what happens on multiple presses of the on button, using it to cycle through your favourite scenes; the dim and off buttons then work as expected. And, be careful, as setting controls in the Home app doesn’t replace the modes set in the Hue app, so you can have unexpected things happening. Thermostats give you a slider to adjust the temperature, although what happens depends on the device. For example, with a Tado Smart Thermostat, adjusting the temperature will put the thermostat into Manual mode. Depending on how you’ve configured Manual Mode in the Tado app the change can be permanent, for a set time or until the next scheduled change.

Why not run home assistant so you can have more control and link home assistant to Google Assistant so that you’re wife can manage more easily. I bought a new router (Black friday!), didn’t want to use the same SSID as I was previously using and now I can’t change it using the app so I had to plug it in to the ethernet port. I will stick with it for as long as I can and most likely will transition over to homekit if it comes down to it. Enter your email address to receive notifications of new posts by email.
- First of all, if you are iOS user, or have Apple TV, iPod, Home Pod and you want to turn your home into smart home, you can easily go with Homekit without buying a new hub.
- The SmartThings app has a decent design and is pretty responsive to your commands, but it’s much more confusing than competing platforms once you start trying to automate your home.
- But since SmartApps are not continuously running, how can we handle checking for future states?
- But because of backward compatibility, S2 devices are still vulnerable during the pairing process.
This is controlled using the free SmartThings SmartApp webCoRE which is like an automation engine. One thing I want to call out though was that I added a SmartThings plug that cycles power on/off every few hours to the tablets. Driving constant power for an extended period of time to a tablet isn’t safe as the batteries aren’t designed for that. This way, the tablets charge for 3 hours, then run off battery discharging themselves for 3 hours which is more what they were designed to do.

I ran across a really cool project on the SmartThings community forums about a home automation dashboard for larger interfaces like computer/tablet screens. I finally got around to trying it out and I’m happy to report it is working really well and was relatively easy to setup.
